As the Winter Games approach expect to see many articles about Norway continues to out punch its weight in international sports. This has been explored a lot over recent years. Most of the focus is on “letting Kids be Kids”. Not forcing them to specialize year-round too soon. Let them play what they think is fun and not put too much pressure on too soon. These parts of it are hugely important.
But an aspect that this article just touches on may actually be more significant. All sports are overseen by a single regulatory body. This provides more consistent governance and less competition between individual sports for participants. Furthermore, funding is provided to the entire system through the national lottery. Removing the focus from bringing in dollars allows the decision makers to make choices based more on the needs of the athletes and less on how do we make money off of these athletes.
