This article and report that is linked in the article present a stark contrast between how Gymnastics New Zealand and USA Gymnastics have dealt with allegations of abuse of their respective athletes.
In the documentary Athlete A, USA Gymnastics is shown to have adopted a ‘sweep it under the rug’ attitude rather than deal with the problem directly.
There are numerous possible take-aways from this situation, but the one I want to highlight is the call for greater athlete representation in the decision making of the sport. This is essential not just in gymnastics, but in all sports.
