I watched the Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony. I was interested in seeing how NBC would address the multiple political concerns that have been raised with China hosting. During the ceremony, I was a little surprised that they were addressed at all, to be frank. The coverage included 2 “China experts” who in discussions with NBC host Mike Tirico delicately talked about a number of sensitive issues (Uyghurs, Peng Shui, China & Russia…).
This article criticizes what they call the “both sides” approach, which I think is a fair critique. Since the article was written before the Games ended, it fails to mention that despite Tirico saying the experts would be back throughout the games for their thoughts, as far as I can tell, they were in fact never seen again on NBC’s broadcast. I didn’t watch every minute of the coverage, so maybe I missed them. I suspect however, NBC decided they didn’t want to approach the 3rd rail again and just stayed away.
